The flickering screen displayed another failed attempt. Another error message. Liam slammed his fist on the desk, the impact echoing in the otherwise silent room. His fingers throbbed. This had been going on for years.

He ran a hand through his hair, the frustration a tangible weight on his shoulders. The medical bills were piling up, the treatments were ineffective, and the future seemed bleak. He had sunk to the level of acceptance.

The doorbell chimed. He hesitated before answering, then opened the door. A woman, leaning heavily on a cane, stood on his porch. In her hands, she held a folder. She stared back at him with a knowing expression.

"I think we have something in common," she said, her voice weary. He nodded. He already knew.
