The realtor’s words, a practiced stream of upbeat pronouncements, bounced off the bland beige walls of his apartment. He listened to the sales pitch, the promises of granite countertops and upgraded appliances, with a blank expression. His hands were clasped loosely in his lap.

He didn’t interrupt, didn’t ask questions. He barely blinked. The realtor paused, expecting a response, a flicker of interest. He just looked at him with an expression that conveyed nothing. He shrugged, a slight movement in his shoulders. The realtor, after a moment of awkward silence, continued with the speech.

He walked the realtor to the door, shaking his head. He watched them walk down the hall. He went back inside. He sat on the couch.
