The antique clock in the hallway seemed to mock Clara with its slow, deliberate ticks. She paced in front of it, fingers drumming a frantic rhythm on her thigh. It was too quiet. The house felt too still. She'd been expecting a flurry of activity, the cheerful chaos of friends and family preparing for her birthday bash. Now, just the echoing silence of an empty home. She’d been told there was a change of plans. A very last-minute change.

Her phone vibrated in her hand. Sarah, her best friend, calling. Clara braced herself. "Hey," she answered, her voice sounding far too loud in the empty space. Sarah’s bubbly tone was clipped, hurried. “Listen, it’s… everything's off. Something came up.”

Clara slumped onto the sofa, the plush cushions offering no comfort. A knot tightened in her stomach. What had come up? She wanted to scream, to lash out at the unseen forces that had disrupted the plans, the carefully laid arrangements. Instead, she just muttered a clipped, “Okay.”
