The low growl of the lawnmower echoed in Mark's ears, a mechanical drone that amplified the internal vibration in his skull. He'd been cutting the grass for hours, the scent of freshly cut grass doing nothing to soothe his nerves. The fluffy Samoyed from next door, always escaping, was currently lounging in the shade of his oak tree, regarding him with an innocent gaze.

He switched off the mower, the sudden silence almost unbearable. He ran a hand through his hair, a nervous gesture he repeated more than once. The air felt heavy, and the dog's presence irritated him. He took a deep breath.

Mark wanted to drive, to *move*. He walked to his car, and with the dog still watching him, he quickly drove off.
