The attic air hung thick and dusty, catching in Amelia's throat as she hauled another box across the warped floorboards. Sunlight sliced through a grimy window, illuminating dancing dust motes that seemed to mock her. She felt like a caged bird, pacing in a space far too small. Her fingers fumbled with the latch, her breath coming in shallow gasps.

Inside the box, amongst moth-eaten shawls and forgotten toys, lay an album bound in cracked leather. She pulled it out, a tremor running through her. Her grandfather, a war hero according to family lore, always spoke of his stoicism and unwavering courage.

Flipping through the pages, she saw a picture of him grinning, leaning against a vintage car, arms wrapped around a woman with fiery red hair. The caption read, "Papa and Rosie, summer of '38." The story she always heard was different. The official story spoke of a quiet farm girl and a life of simple pleasures. A knot formed in her stomach.
