Sarah ran a hand through her hair, the strands tangling around her fingers. The kitchen clock ticked with infuriating slowness. She'd cleaned the counters, scrubbed the sink, and even organized the spice rack, all in a frantic attempt to occupy her mind. Now, she leaned against the refrigerator, the cold metal a small comfort against the heat bubbling beneath her skin.

She opened a drawer, looking for the junk mail she'd forgotten to throw away. A crumpled piece of paper, folded multiple times, fell out. It was a letter to her best friend from high school, never mailed. It was filled with youthful angst, unspoken fears about the future, and a palpable sense of being trapped. Sarah's throat tightened; the feeling hadn’t completely faded.
