He sat on the porch swing, the late afternoon sun casting long shadows. The rocking motion was meant to be soothing, but it only amplified the unease that had settled deep within him. Michael felt as though he was perpetually on the verge of something, but he couldn’t quite grasp what it was. He picked up the scattered newspapers, then tossed them aside, unable to focus.

He reached under the swing, pulling out a tarnished metal box. Inside, he found a bundle of letters, tied with a faded ribbon. He picked one up, addressed to his father. The words, filled with unspoken resentments and unfulfilled expectations, mirrored the emptiness that now threatened to consume him. The weight of it settled on his chest.
