The clicking of keyboards and the drone of the air conditioning were amplifying the discomfort that had been building inside me for weeks. I couldn’t concentrate. I kept staring out the window, watching the traffic below, wishing I was anywhere else. Anything to break free of this stifling feeling.

The email. I knew it. Subject: "Important Company Update." My pulse quickened as I read the words. "Acquisition." My stomach plummeted. I felt a sudden urge to flee, to disappear.

I slammed my laptop shut. I grabbed my bag, leaving everything behind. As I walked out, I didn’t see my boss. I didn’t see any of my coworkers. I didn't care.
