The morning sun streamed through the kitchen window, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air. Evelyn found herself picking at the peel on her orange, then discarding the fruit uneaten. Her thoughts were a whirlwind, and she felt compelled to do *something*, anything, to escape their grip. She went into the spare room, ostensibly to organize the linen closet.

Instead, her gaze drifted to the dusty filing cabinet against the wall, a repository for old tax returns and forgotten paperwork. She pulled out a drawer, intending to tidy, but her hand lingered on a manila folder marked “Investments.” Inside, she discovered a detailed financial plan, bearing her husband, David's, signature. The account names, the investment strategies... they were completely foreign to her.
