Gemotions

The attic air hung thick and heavy, dust motes dancing in the single shaft of sunlight. Amelia tugged at the collar of her shirt, feeling a prickling unease crawl up her spine. She’d been up here for hours, sifting through forgotten belongings, but nothing seemed to satisfy this strange itch she couldn't scratch. She knelt before a large, wooden crate, its metal clasps rusted. She didn't recall this box, but her fingers traced the faded inscription on the lid: “To future selves, from the class of '98.” A jolt went through her, a memory of a younger version of herself, maybe, filled with unfulfilled ambitions.

She pried the lid open. Inside, wrapped in yellowed newspaper, lay a collection of items: a cassette tape, a photograph of a group of teenagers laughing, and a letter. The script on the letter was familiar, yet alien. *“Dear Self, We're hoping you're doing something amazing. Don't let life become ordinary.”* The words struck a chord, a hollow echo in the chambers of her heart.
