The summer heat pressed down on Lena, making her skin feel sticky. She’d been aimlessly wandering through the park for hours, the vibrant green of the trees doing nothing to soothe her disquiet. She stopped near an ancient oak, its roots exposed by erosion. A glint of metal caught her eye. She knelt, brushing away the loose soil to reveal a rectangular box. She wrestled the lid open. Inside, nestled amongst layers of plastic wrap, was a small, leather-bound journal. Lena flipped it open, the pages filled with youthful script. *“I dream of traveling the world,”* she read, her heart aching with a sensation she couldn't name. Her own life felt cramped, confined.
