"But why?" Alex’s voice was barely a whisper. The weight of the coach’s words pressed down on him. From star quarterback to…wide receiver. It was a demotion, pure and simple.

The training room felt stuffy. The smell of liniment and sweat usually energized him, but now it made his stomach clench. He fiddled with the tape wrapped around his wrist, tearing at the edges.

He'd spent his whole life dreaming of leading his team to victory under the lights. Now, his dreams felt as though they were being torn apart as well. The vibrant energy he usually exuded had vanished, replaced by an inexplicable, lingering emptiness.
