The hum of the washing machine was the only sound in the small apartment. He was supposed to be folding laundry, but instead, he was staring at the blinking cursor on his laptop screen, the unfinished essay mocking him. A friend request notification popped up, momentarily distracting him: from Stephanie, who had made a habit of belittling him throughout high school.

He felt a deep, profound weariness settle over him, an exhaustion that had nothing to do with physical exertion. The weight of past injustices settled upon him, as heavy as a lead vest. He closed his eyes, his head throbbing.
