"Just another day," Maya muttered, kicking a pebble across the dusty floor of the thrift store. Everything felt heavy, the air thick with a sense of futility. She wandered the aisles, searching for something, anything, to distract her. The worn books offered little comfort.

She selected a volume of poetry, its cover stained and tattered. As she opened it, a pressed flower, a vibrant violet, tumbled out. Attached was a note, scrawled in a child's shaky handwriting: "For Mommy. I love you." Maya's breath hitched. She saw her own mother's face in her mind. A flood of unwelcome memories, and the longing in her heart was almost too much to bear.
