The florist had a kind smile, but she’d only been able to offer a shrug and an apology. No note. The hydrangeas were gorgeous, though, a sea of blues and purples. Clara clutched them to her chest, the cool stems a comfort against her skin.

She walked slowly, each step a monumental effort. The park was crowded, children laughing, couples strolling hand in hand. She avoided eye contact, hugging the flowers like a shield. She found a bench overlooking the lake and sat, the water's surface shimmering in the sunlight. A wave of exhaustion washed over her.
