Michael sprawled across his bed, the worn mattress molding to his frame. He had a textbook open, but his attention was elsewhere, drifting to the rhythm of the late afternoon light filtering through his window. The gentle breeze rustled the leaves of the old oak tree outside, creating a soothing melody he loved.

The notification popped up: a new email. He’d almost forgotten about it. His scholarship application status. He clicked the link, a slight hesitation in his hand. “Decision: Denied.”

His chest tightened. He sat up, the book sliding off his lap. The leaves outside, previously a source of serenity, now seemed to whisper a judgment he couldn't quite decipher, a cold wind coming from the outside. The room felt smaller, the walls closing in. He stared at the email, the words a blunt refusal, and his earlier feeling felt like a distant, fragile dream.
