"Good morning, Martha!" I called cheerfully, hoisting the overflowing laundry basket. My own yard was neatly edged with flowering shrubs, a vibrant border between my home and the world. The prospect of a fence dividing the properties didn’t quicken my pulse.

My keys jangled as I unlocked my door. Inside, the familiar scent of cinnamon and lavender welcomed me. I deposited the wash, already envisioning the crisp, clean linens drying in the sun.

The radio played softly in the kitchen, a familiar melody. I poured myself a cup of coffee and gazed out at the world. It was a good world, a simple world, and the proposed fencing felt like an irrelevant detail.
