Sunlight streamed through the window, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air. This moment, this quiet preparation for the school day, felt utterly predictable, and that, she realized, was exactly what she needed.

“Ready for Mrs. Gable’s class, sweetie?” Amelia asked, her voice soft, smoothing a stray strand of Lily’s hair.

Lily nodded, her eyes wide with a mixture of excitement and apprehension. “Yes, Mommy! Do you remember Mrs. Gable?”
