The locker room hummed with a low, contented thrum. John leaned back against the cool, tiled wall, the familiar scent of sweat and liniment filling his nostrils. His shoulders relaxed. This was it. The culmination of years of relentless training, the payoff for countless early mornings and aching muscles. He’d visualized this moment a thousand times. He’d made the first cut. Now, the final roster was being posted.

His teammate, Mark, clapped him on the back, a boisterous laugh escaping him. "You got this, man! No doubt." John simply nodded, a slow smile spreading across his face. He felt the weight of the moment, but it was a pleasant pressure, a comfortable certainty. He knew he'd done everything right.

The coach emerged, clipboard in hand. The room fell silent. John's pulse picked up slightly, a fluttering in his chest, but he kept his posture easy, his breathing controlled. He looked at the list. His name wasn't there.
