Gemotions

The rhythmic thump of the jump rope was hypnotic, each rotation a steady beat against the hardwood floor. Maya enjoyed this part of her routine the most. It was predictable, a familiar dance of her body and the rope. She could lose herself in the motion, the world outside the gym fading away. This was her element.

She wrapped the rope around her arms, stretching slowly, feeling the satisfying pull in her muscles. Coach Thompson had been hinting at her potential, the glint of approval in his eyes a reward in itself. She was ready. More than ready.

The announcement came over the loudspeaker. She listened intently, her hand gripping the rope tighter. Names were called. Applause erupted with each successful acceptance. Her name was not among them. The jump rope slipped from her grasp and fell to the floor, forgotten.
