The worn wooden door of "The Book Nook" creaked open as it always did, a sound that always signaled a moment to unwind. The scent of old paper and leather always embraced Michael like a hug. He loved browsing the shelves, a feeling he got nowhere else. He found his corner, and settled in with a tall stack of books.

The owner, Mrs. Gable, usually buried in her own reading, approached him, her face etched with a rare furrow. “Michael, dear,” she began softly, “I have some difficult news.”

He felt the floor beneath him shift. The shelves, once sources of calm, now seemed to loom. The dust motes dancing in the sunbeams suddenly felt intrusive and oppressive. The room, which once felt boundless, now felt like a cage. He couldn't meet her eyes, as her words cut deep.
