Gemotions

The fire crackled merrily in the hearth, casting dancing shadows across the walls of the cozy cabin. Thomas stirred the stew bubbling in the cast-iron pot, the rich aroma filling the air. Rain lashed against the windows, a soundtrack to his evening's solitude. It was precisely what he needed.

A knock, insistent and unwelcome, shattered the peace. He hesitated before opening the door.

A woman stood on the stoop, her eyes wide, holding a photograph. "Thomas? Do you remember me?"

Thomas's hand tightened on the doorknob. His breath hitched. "No," he said, his voice a low growl. "I don't." The warm glow of the fire seemed to diminish in the face of the cold wind.
