The scent of freshly brewed coffee filled the air, mingling with the subtle aroma of paper and ink. Katherine loved the quiet solitude of the early morning before the office was fully awake. The world felt muted and predictable then, and that was the way she liked it. She always arrived early, organized, and in control.

"You went to Camp Greenhaven?" Mark asked, walking in with a bag of pastries.

Katherine carefully put down her pen. She'd known Mark for years. "Yes. Why?"

Mark grinned. "I was Head Lifeguard. Remember the diving board?"

She smiled, a small, genuine smile. "How could I forget?"
