He stretched, luxuriating in the warmth of the early morning sun filtering through the blinds. A low, contented sigh escaped his lips. Their anniversary was next month, and he’d been planning a trip to Italy. The perfect getaway. The thought caused a ripple of satisfaction to spread through him.

He was looking for his passport, which he knew to be in the top drawer of his bedside table. Instead, his fingers brushed against a small, metal box. He didn't remember putting it there. Curiosity piqued, he pried it open. Inside, nestled among velvet lining, were stacks of hundred-dollar bills. A significant amount. He blinked. He felt a slow, unfamiliar thrum in his chest.
