Gemotions

The low hum of the refrigerator, the rhythmic ticking of the grandfather clock in the hall – these were the sounds that soothed her. Wrapped in a thick, oversized blanket on her plush velvet couch, Maya felt an almost weightless sensation. The book in her lap was barely touched; she was too absorbed in the quiet peace.

A furious banging started downstairs. It was the same neighbor, Mrs. Gable.

“Is that music I hear?” a shrill voice cut through the floorboards. “I’m trying to get some rest! Can you please just stop?” Maya’s shoulders tightened. Her fingers instinctively curled tighter around the book.

She sighed, a slow breath that released some of the tension. She rose and closed the curtains, cutting off any chance of eye contact with the outside world.
