Gemotions

The aroma of freshly baked bread wafted from the kitchen, mingling with the scent of the lilac bushes in Mrs. Gable's garden. Martha hummed, pulling on her gardening gloves. The sun warmed her face as she surveyed her own small plot, filled with tomatoes and basil. The rhythmic clip of the shears in her hand was a familiar and comforting sound.

A sudden rumble, the deep growl of a powerful engine, broke the quiet. Martha glanced up. Mr. Abernathy, her neighbor, was pulling into his driveway in a car she’d never seen before, a sleek, black vehicle that gleamed under the midday sun. It was nothing like the battered old station wagon he usually drove.

“Afternoon, Martha,” Mr. Abernathy said, his voice surprisingly jovial. He was dressed in a crisp, white shirt and expensive-looking trousers. The contrast between his usual, rumpled appearance and this new, polished persona made her blink. He didn't even sweat when getting out of his car.
