Rain drummed a soothing rhythm against the windows of her small apartment. The low hum of the refrigerator filled the kitchen. Liam, bundled in his favorite, oversized sweater, stirred his instant coffee, feeling the warmth spread through his fingers. He’d just finished paying the rent, a weight lifted from his shoulders.

He watched Mr. Henderson, his upstairs neighbor, come home. Mr. Henderson always appeared after dark, with a briefcase. Tonight he pulled up in a stretch limo. Liam almost choked on his coffee.

The limo driver, a man built like a granite statue, held an umbrella over Mr. Henderson as he strode towards the building. Liam, transfixed, noticed the perfectly tailored suit, the crisp white shirt, the manicured nails. The man went to great lengths to avoid the rain.
