The crackling fire in the hearth cast dancing shadows across the living room walls. The scent of pine and cinnamon filled the air, mingling with the faint aroma of the roast simmering in the oven. Michael settled into his worn armchair, a well-loved book in his lap. The gentle glow of the lamp provided the perfect light for reading.

A loud thud reverberated from next door, followed by a series of increasingly agitated shouts. It was Mrs. Petrov. Michael had heard her fighting with her husband before, but tonight, the tone was different, sharper.

He ventured to his window and peered through the curtains. There was a huge, black truck parked at the curb, with men in black suits moving large boxes into Mrs. Petrov's house. The light from the streetlamp glinted off the shiny surface of the truck's exterior.
