The familiar rhythm of the sewing machine was a soothing constant. Maria loved the way the needle pierced the fabric, creating intricate patterns and designs. The soft, hum of the motor, the gentle tug of the thread, the feel of the cloth beneath her fingers – it was all utterly familiar.

Mr. Peterson, the quiet man next door, was always fixing things around his home. Tonight, however, the activity was less ordinary. A line of cars, all luxury models, were parked on the street.

He emerged from his house, resplendent in a tailored suit. He directed a group of men in unloading boxes. He gestured and seemed to be giving instructions. He barely looked at her as he walked past.
