The sounds of construction next door intruded upon her concentration. Mr. Harrison, a man she knew only as a quiet retiree, was undertaking some extensive renovations. A huge, modern house, unlike anything in the neighborhood, was beginning to rise from the ground.

The workers, dressed in expensive workwear, were incredibly efficient. The noise was constant. Eliza peered through her window and watched as a massive, ornate fountain was being craned into place.
