He hummed as he watered his petunias, the spray arcing gracefully in the late-morning light. The rhythmic hiss of the hose, the vibrant colors of the blooms, the quiet of the neighborhood – these were the things that anchored him. He'd spent years cultivating this little haven, this meticulously arranged patch of tranquility. He heard the gravel crunch on the path.

"Morning, George," Mrs. Peterson called, her voice bright. She was standing at the edge of his property, her gaze fixed on the towering pine that straddled their yards.

"Morning, Agnes," he replied evenly, turning off the water. The hose went limp in his hand.

"I was wondering," she said, her smile wavering, "about that tree. It's really casting a shadow over my garden. I was considering getting it removed, since it's on the line, and all." He felt a tightening in his chest. A silent, instinctive resistance.
