The gentle click of the laptop as she closed it was followed by a long sigh of contentment. The quiet apartment, illuminated by the soft glow of the table lamp, felt like a sanctuary. Emily knew exactly where the list was kept: tucked inside the hollowed-out book on the shelf.

She ran her eyes down the list, a sense of peace settling over her. "Learn to surf." She pictured him, struggling at first, then eventually finding his balance, the sun glinting off the water. “See a Broadway show.” She knew, if she had to, that she’d do whatever it took to make those dreams come true, too.
