The evening air, cool and crisp, drifted in through the open window. David leaned back in his armchair, a dog-eared copy of a classic novel resting on his chest. The rhythmic ticking of the grandfather clock in the hallway was a constant, predictable companion. He savored the quiet, the feeling of being completely and utterly… present.

A letter arrived, tucked between the door and the frame. He knew, before he even opened it, what it contained. The building. Condos. He sighed. His fingers tightened on the book. He'd lived here for twenty years. Where would he go? He closed his eyes. Then, he opened them again, the clock's ticking a soothing rhythm. He took a deep breath. He’d deal with it. Later.
