The phone rang. It was my mother. "How's work, dear?" she asked. I chuckled. "Great, Mom, just great." The salary adjustments were a big deal, and not just financially. The recognition felt good. Very good.

As I made my way to the office kitchen, I saw Sam, the intern, standing by the microwave. He gave me a quick glance, then looked back at his lunch. His face was a little flushed. I said hello. He mumbled a reply.

Back at my desk, I took a deep breath. A sense of calm washed over me. I opened my email and began. The day felt full of possibilities.
