The email pinged, a little digital chime. Sarah’s fingers, normally drumming a rapid rhythm on the desk, came to a standstill. Half-sister. The words swam before her eyes. For a long moment, she just stared at the screen, then slowly, deliberately, she swiveled in her chair and gazed out the office window. The city skyline shimmered in the afternoon heat. Then, she picked up her phone and dialed the number for her favorite bakery, already planning a celebratory cake. A weight had lifted, and she felt lighter than air.
