The notice taped to the elevator door fluttered in the draft. Sarah leaned in, squinting at the bold font announcing the building's conversion to condominiums. A slow smile spread across her face. This was perfect. She'd been subtly upgrading her apartment, knowing this day would come. New hardwood floors, a designer kitchen, all on a renter's budget. Now, the value of her "investment" was about to skyrocket.

She hummed a tuneless melody as she rode the elevator up to her apartment. The late afternoon sun streamed through her windows, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the air. Time to celebrate. She grabbed a bottle of champagne from the fridge and poured a generous glass.
