David felt a knot tighten in his gut as he stared at the drawings. The drawings his niece, Sarah, had made. They featured the character that tormented his younger years, the creature in the closet. The familiar, chillingly empty black eyes, the unnerving grin.

He began to sweat, despite the air conditioning. The shadows in the room seemed to deepen, to shift. He felt as though something was watching him from those dark corners.

He backed away slowly, carefully, as though trying not to disturb something invisible. He had to get out, he needed to think, to breathe. He turned and fled.
