The drive felt like an eternity. Each mile stretched into an agonizing exercise in contemplation. He pulled up in front of the rundown building and sat for a moment. He had to be sure, absolutely certain. He'd followed him here, saw him walk inside, saw his work van parked there. A van that had "delivery service" written on the side. Not the "architectural firm" he had always boasted about.

His muscles ached, a tense coil ready to spring. He gripped the steering wheel so hard his hands trembled. He couldn't articulate why he felt so fragile.

He got out of the car, each step heavier than the last. The building looked ominous in the fading light.
