He read the letter again, each word a hammer blow. "We regret to inform you..." The elegant script, normally a symbol of authority, now seemed malicious, a source of torment. He dropped the letter onto the table, the paper fluttering softly to the surface, but the noise of his heartbeat was all he could hear.

His hands shook as he reached for his phone, dialing the familiar number. The ringing tone felt like an eternity. He ran a hand through his hair, the familiar gesture failing to offer any comfort. He felt a tightening in his chest, a constriction that made it difficult to breathe.
