Gemotions

The flickering candlelight on the birthday cake seemed to mock him. His stomach twisted, a cold knot tightening with each tick of the clock. He had anticipated the booming laughter, the joyful chaos of his friends, the warm feeling of belonging. Now, silence clung to the air like a shroud. A single, crumpled piece of paper lay on the table; the cancellation notice, it read. He reached out a trembling hand, fingers brushing against the cold, impersonal ink.

He backed away from the table, his breath catching in his throat. Every shadow in the room morphed into a lurking figure, their silent forms bearing down on him. A bead of sweat trickled down his temple, tracing a path of icy dread. He couldn't stay here, not surrounded by the ghosts of what wasn’t going to be.

His legs felt like lead, each step a monumental effort. He stumbled towards the door, his hand fumbling with the knob. He just wanted to disappear, to melt into the shadows and be unseen. The thought of facing the empty street outside, the world continuing on without acknowledging this loss, sent a fresh wave of unease crashing over him.
