She clutched the phone, her knuckles white. The words, "party cancelled," echoed in her ears, a relentless drumbeat against the silence of the empty house. Her pulse hammered against her ribs, a frantic rhythm. She felt a chill creep up her spine, even though the room was warm.

Tears pricked at her eyes, blurring the familiar furniture. Each object now seemed imbued with a sinister quality, a reminder of the joy that would never materialize. She wanted to scream, to lash out, but the words were trapped in her throat, a choked sob.
