The realtor had said the house was move-in ready. But now, clutching the flickering flashlight, Amelia wished she’d insisted on a thorough inspection. Dust motes danced in the beam, illuminating a door she’d never noticed before, tucked behind the bookshelf in the library. Her breath hitched. The air in the house had become strangely heavy, like a woolen blanket in summer.

Her fingers trembled as she reached out, the brass knob cool and unfamiliar against her skin. The wood groaned in protest as she pushed, revealing a narrow staircase descending into shadow. A metallic tang, like old pennies, filled her nostrils. She hesitated. “Hello?” her voice cracked, the word swallowed by the darkness.
