The house, a grand, old mansion, had captivated Robert from the moment he saw it. The hidden room, though, discovered behind a loose panel in the study, was a different story. The room, barely larger than a closet, was dark and smelled of decay.

He stood perfectly still, his body rigid. The blood seemed to drain from his face. His skin prickled with gooseflesh. He had an impulse, sudden and intense, to turn and run.

He knew he should leave, get away, pretend he'd never seen it. But the room, and the door itself, seemed to exert a strange, inexplicable pull. He hesitated. And then, he took a step forward, and the hinges of the door squealed in protest as he moved.
