The flickering neon sign of the diner cast long, dancing shadows across Amelia's face as she waited. Her breath hitched in her throat, a tiny, almost silent gasp. Across from her, a woman, equally expectant, kept fiddling with the strap of her purse. A text message notification chimed on Amelia's phone; a picture, supposedly from “Mark,” of a half-eaten burger and fries. She felt a cold prickle at the base of her neck. Something wasn't right. The other woman, who’d introduced herself as Sarah, mirrored the uncertainty in Amelia’s eyes.

Sarah’s fingers tightened around the handle of her own phone. The air in the diner felt thick, almost suffocating. Neither spoke. The silence was punctuated only by the rhythmic hiss of the coffee machine and the clatter of silverware.

Finally, Sarah cleared her throat. “That’s… that’s him, isn’t it?” She pointed to the image on Amelia’s screen, her voice barely a whisper. The implication hung heavy, a dark cloud settling over their table. They looked at each other, their faces etched with a shared, unspoken dread.
