"I don't like this," Leo said, his voice a low, strangled sound. He trailed behind his sister, his boots scuffing the worn linoleum of the kitchen floor. The silence felt oppressive, broken only by the rhythmic tick of a grandfather clock in the corner. He couldn't shake the feeling of being watched, of unseen eyes observing their every move.

The peeling paint on the cabinets seemed to leer, and the shadows from the swaying tree outside the window danced like sinister figures. His sister, Amelia, was already rummaging through a drawer, her back to him. He found himself edging closer to the door, his hand hovering near the handle.

He imagined the house settling around them, the old timbers sighing and groaning as the night encroached. He wanted to flee, to be anywhere but here. The thought of being alone in this house with the encroaching night made him queasy.
