The silence amplified the sounds of the house. The creaks and groans, the gentle sighs of the aged wood, were magnified in her ears. Sarah felt a prickling sensation on the back of her neck, a warning that something wasn't right. She hated it here.

She gripped her phone, her fingers tight around the cool metal. She considered calling her brother, but decided against it. He’d just tell her to toughen up. But the heavy feel of the house pressed against her.

She had to remind herself it was just a house. Just a building. But the shadows seemed to lengthen, to shift, to take on the shapes of unseen figures. She stood there, frozen, the house wrapping around her like a living thing.
