The old house seemed to breathe around them. John felt a bead of sweat trickle down his temple. The air in the kitchen was stale, thick with the scent of dust and decay. He kept glancing at the windows, at the darkening sky outside.

His sister, Sarah, was already talking about getting a locksmith to change the locks. He had to agree.

The shadows seemed to deepen, to take on menacing forms. The silence was unnerving, broken only by the frantic beat of his own heart. He wanted to go home, to be in a place where he felt safe and secure. He reached out to his sister, his hand shaking slightly.
