The afternoon sun cast long shadows as Maya circled the house one last time. She ran her hand along the weathered siding, her fingers tracing the patterns of the wood. The wind picked up, swirling leaves around her ankles. A chill ran through her, despite the warmth of the sun. The wind seemed to be carrying whispers, old secrets that she didn’t want to hear.

She found herself checking the locked windows, then the front door again and again. The rhythmic pounding of her heart was the only thing she could hear. She wanted to scream out, to lash out at the world. The world felt like it was playing a mean trick on her. Everything she knew was gone. She was the only one there now.
