"I just… I can’t," Michael stammered, pulling his keys out of his pocket and fumbling with the lock on his car. His throat felt tight, and his chest felt like it was being squeezed. He glanced back at the house, a monument to his childhood, now reduced to a skeleton.

The noise of the demolition, the crashing, the grinding, was relentless. He wanted to plug his ears and disappear. He swallowed hard. The thought of never coming back here again, the weight of the memories, made him want to collapse. He just wanted to get away, to be anywhere else.
