“It’s just a house, honey,” her husband murmured, squeezing her hand. But Emily couldn’t meet his gaze. She kept staring at the building, watching the dust billow. A dull ache throbbed in her temples. She suddenly felt an overwhelming urge to run. She wished she had never come back.

She closed her eyes, trying to conjure up the images she loved. The fireplace, the scent of cinnamon from her mother's baking, her first love. They seemed lost, vanishing like smoke. She felt completely exposed, vulnerable. She wanted to be held, to feel safe.
